Green roofs are designed to capture rainwater when it falls, allowing it to be temporarily held before it is either absorbed by the plants or drains away. They slow down the flow and reduce the risk of erosion. In addition, they prevent frequent flooding by holding a large amount of water during rainfall. Moreover, adding retention systems into green roof designs improves their ability to control stormwater effectively. The systems temporarily store excess rainwater, allowing gradual release back into the atmosphere through evaporation or plant uptake. It supports plant growth and contributes to a more sustainable urban environment. An increase in the construction of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings is expected to escalate the demand for these roofs. Furthermore, government support to eliminate toxic greenhouse gases and reduce global warming is anticipated to create lucrative opportunities for the green roof market during 2020-2027.

In 2000, the Chicago City Hall Green Roof Project was launched as a demonstration to assess the impact of green roofs on reducing urban heat islands and improving stormwater management. It provided evidence-based results to promote green roof installation throughout the city. The project showed a substantial reduction in the amount of stormwater runoff. The green roof helped to manage stormwater more effectively by absorbing rainwater. It reduced the strain on the city’s drainage system. In addition, sensors installed reflected a decrease in surface temperature compared to ususal roofs, highlighting their effectiveness in reducing the urban heat island effect. The building’s energy consumption for cooling and heating was reduced, leading to lower utility bills. The extended lifespan of the roof also contributed to long-term savings by minimizing the need for frequent repairs and replacements.
